What is Poka-Yoke?
Poka = Inadvertent mistake
Yoke = To avoid
Originally developed by Shigeo Shingo as part of the Toyota Production System, Poka-Yoke is a crucial part of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma strategies. It involves designing processes, systems, or tools in such a way that it's either impossible to make an error, or the error is immediately detected and corrected.
Types of Poka-Yoke Techniques
- Prevention-Based (Control Type):
Prevents an error from occurring (e.g., a connector that only fits one way).
- Detection-Based (Warning Type):
Alerts users when an error has occurred (e.g., an alarm when a machine isn't loaded correctly).
